Dopamine-scrolling: the new public health emergency no one names

It now has a name in the scientific literature. And it's not a "bad habit". It's a neurological phenomenon with measurable consequences for attention, stress, and mental health.

It's no longer anecdotal

In 2025, the journal Journal of the Royal Society for Public Health published an article that coined a new term: "dopamine-scrolling". It's not a social media neologism. It's an evidence-based diagnosis: compulsive scrolling functions as a dopaminergic circuit analogous to known behavioral addictions.

The article, titled "Dopamine-Scrolling: A Modern Public Health Challenge Requiring Urgent Attention", reviews data from multiple studies and concludes that the phenomenon meets the clinical criteria of an addictive pattern: tolerance (you need more time), withdrawal (anxiety when you don't have your phone), loss of control, and interference with daily life.

The circuit: how it works

Dr. Susan Tapert, professor of Psychiatry at UC San Diego and principal investigator of the ABCD study (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development), explains it this way:

When you find new or alarming information, dopamine is released — the reward neurotransmitter. This creates a loop: you seek more information → you feel anxiety → dopamine "rewards" you for finding something new → you seek more.

The problem is that the amygdala — the brain's fear center — sends stress signals that keep you hypervigilant. And the prefrontal cortex, responsible for rational decision-making, gets suppressed. The result: you know you should stop, but you can't.

It's not just "bad stuff"

A key finding of recent research is that you don't need negative content to activate the circuit. Dr. Elvira Bolat, associate professor of Digital Marketing at Bournemouth University, explains that any novel content generates dopamine "hits":

"What happens in our brain is this release of dopamine. It's like a reward system where you end up hooked on the content. It becomes addictive scrolling and it's very hard to manage time."

TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts — all use the same pattern: short, novel, infinite content. Your brain has no natural stopping points. And the platforms know it.

Gen Z: the most affected generation

The BBC investigated the impact on university students in 2025. What they found is consistent with the scientific data: students who admit they can't control their scrolling time, who reach for their phones every 5-10 minutes during class, and who describe short-form content as "escapism" they can't break out of.

Greta Gustafsson, a student at Bournemouth University, describes it this way: "It becomes addictive scrolling and it's very hard to manage my time. It's escapism."

The ABCD study at UC San Diego, which follows more than 11,000 adolescents over a decade, is finding structural changes in brain development associated with intensive screen use.

What the research says works

1. Eliminate zero-friction points

Apps are designed so that opening and scrolling is the easiest action in the world. Flipping that equation works: move apps to hidden folders, enable a black-and-white screen, use app blockers during certain hours.

2. The first 2 hours matter most

Your baseline cortisol levels for the day are set in the first hours. If you start the day scrolling, you set your nervous system to stress mode for the hours that follow. Protocol: zero screens in the first hour.

3. Post-scroll breathing

The activation of the sympathetic nervous system from scrolling is real and measurable. Two minutes of diaphragmatic breathing (4-7-8) activate the vagus nerve and counteract the accumulated stress response.

The question you should ask yourself

The research is clear: dopamine-scrolling is not a personal failure. It's a design failure. Platforms are designed to exploit your neurology.

You don't need more willpower. You need to understand what's happening to you. And now you have the science to do it.
